Forum to be upgraded soon

Recommended Posts

FYI...

The forum will be upgraded soon... it's our 2nd upgrade since starting CTFlier. We don't expect any problems, but you never know. We purposely have skipped over several minor updates, since everything appeared to be running great, and nobody has reported any problems. We finally decided to upgrade after the current version had been around a while, was very stable, and offers some new features. Also, they've declared our old version EOL - End Of Life.

So, you might notice a few changes, and probably won't see most others, but they help make the board more stable and secure, and prevent spam attacks.

Let us know if you experience any problemms.

Issue regarding newest update to CT forum.

When returning to the forum to read "Content I have not read," I am presented with the entire thread, starting at the top of the page with the first post, i.e. 1, then 2, etc., in chronological order.

Is it possible, after logging in each seperate time, to view posts, beginning with the first unread post of an entire thread, skipping posts already viewed?

As it stands now, at least from what I am seeing, with each new log in, if I have set to view unread content, it takes me to the beginning of the entire thread, and I must scroll down through the entire thread until I come to the place where I left off from a previous visit.

Maybe I need to adjust a setting, but I find the above cumbersome and annoying, decreasing the overall experience with the forum.

By the way, on the old forum, after logging on, then clicking on a thread, it would take me to the place (post) where I left off, with the newest unread message. Any way this new forum can be set up that way?

All help and responses are appreciated.

Thank you.

Bill I.

The new software greatly increases the ways you can review content. If you enter the forum and choose "view new content", you have options for different timeframes (my favorite is 24 hours), or "content I have not yet read" or "content new since my last visit", etc. Of course, for those options to work, you must be logged-in, and probably need to have cookies turned on.

You can create an icon for your favorite content filter, by just making a favorite after selecting your viewing option.

Answer to above issue:

When viewing threads . . . in order to "skip" to the newest post, click on the "little blue ball" icon, which is directly to the left of each thread topic. That will direct you to the newest unread message. That saves much time by not having to scroll down through a thread to find where you left off from your previous visit. :)

For the "little blue ball" to appear, you must be logged in, and must have selected "view new content", and must have time period set to "content you have not read"...

For those who don't normally use this method, make sure the click on the "Mark community read (forum)" button at the bottom to wipe the slate clean. That way, it the system will be able to only present new items. Otherwise, you might see stuff from years ago.

BTW... I noticed there is no longer a "media" button, which we previously used to embed youtube videos on the forum. IT'S OK... I found out that you just use the normal "link" button (url), and the system automatically embeds the video.

Good catch, thanks again Tim.

Earlier I said it wasn't a big deal, but it is starting to get annoying. If I am looking at say, Rotax engines amd hit the back button it goes back to the top of the forum page instead of back to the veiw I had before I clicked on Rotax engines. This is kind of a pain if the next area I want to look at is Airframes. It didn't do this before, and any other forum I visit doesn't do this. Tom

Tom,

When I click back, my system goes back to same place (not the top). Explain with a little more detail how you browse the information... do you use the "new content" options? Does it do it with a different browser?

Anybody else?

Tim,

I'm using IE, never have used any other browser. I log in to the forum with http://ctflier.com/ in the address bar. I scroll down to the topics I want to look at like Engine/Rotax. I will either click on the topic or the post shown on the right. When I hit the back button to go back the the forum topics it goes back to the top of the forum page then I have to scroll back down to where I was. It used to stay right by Engine/Rotax for example if that is what I backed out from. Tom

Tom,

The back button provided by IE takes you back to the previous page to the scroll point where you clicked to get to the current page. The website has no influence you are just reloading from cached content. If however you click on a link to take you back, perhaps using the breadcrumb links then the page reloads and you see the page from the top.

The site is more intuitive if you avoid the browser's back button because the reloaded page you get instead will have current content and posts that you have read will no longer be highligted.

It is not taking me back to the scroll point it is taking me back to the top of the page every time. I'm doing it like I have since I joined the site in 2010. This changed with the upgrade. I don't think it is something I changed, because no other sites I visit have changed. Tom

It may be a cache issue... maybe your browser is picking up old material, or not caching properly. Have you tried a different computer, just for grins.? Or tried clearing your cache? Is caching set to "automatic"? (temporary Internet files settings)

Tom,

I still can't tell for sure if you are "going back" via a link or your browser's back button. Try this please, replicate the behavior but before going back copy the URL (web address) then use the backspace key on the keyboard and copy the new url.

I go to the opening page of the forum http://ctflier.com/ . I scroll down to http://ctflier.com/index.php?/forum/17-general-maintenance/ . When I bring my curser up to the back button on my browser upper left corner of the screen and click on it goes back to the top of the page http://ctflier.com/ , and not back to the view I had when I clicked on http://ctflier.com/index.php?/forum/17-general-maintenance/ .

Tom, apparently your backbutton doesn't remember v.scroll position of parent page. We might want to look at the response header that you are getting with the parent page but before doing that understand that IE is pretty temperamental and if you are using a very old or a very new version a version change ( or browser change I like Chrome ) might be the easiest way to go.

What IE version are you using?

BTW vertical scroll position retention is not an uncommon problem in IE and Firefox as well.

Tom,

I did a little digging and found that this board sends out this instruction to your browser in its response header:

Cache-Control no-cache, must-revalidate, max-age=0

Detailed explanation

To prevent a web browser from caching a page, web servers can send a number of HTTP headers to influence caching behavior. In Mozilla, the Cache-Control: no-store header will cause it to purposely forget layout state data — including form values and scroll positions.

That's from Firefox but IE has this bug as well. We can change this setting but before we do we should make sure it isn't set to not cache for some other reason.
