Al Downs Posted July 21, 2013 Report Share Posted July 21, 2013 Have any of you heard of OPEN AIRPLANE? They are a company setting up what they call bases around the country. From these "bases" you can rent planes you have been checked out in at any member location without a local check out. In other words, I am in Wisconsin and if I travel to Arizona I would be able to rent (in my case a CTLS) from a base in Arizona based on my profile and checkout in Wisconsin. They do it with all models of airplane so a private pilot has more use of a system like this be for me it is only sport planes and I prefer to stick with the CTLS. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a system like this or has any interest in a system like this from a pilot or rental perspective? Al Downs Posted July 21, 2013 Author Report Share Posted July 21, 2013 They say the have a system where they gather a lot of information about the pilots qualifications and if there are special circumstances such as Santa Anna winds it may take extra check out time locally. paul m Posted July 22, 2013 Report Share Posted July 22, 2013 I have followed their progress and I think they just launched with five locations. I didn't think they were offering any LSA options. As you can imagine insurance has been one of their biggest hurdles. I suspect that for the foreseeable future bases will be opened that don't have many unique circumstances in the area. I think supplemental instruction would only come in to play if the pilot is not trained in something like mountain flying.
