CT4ME
The Rotax 912is engine is already being improved upon. The new "sport" has better power & torque and even better fuel efficiency, due to a bigger airbox and new computer. Existing owners get the upgrade free, but will pay labor for installation of the updated parts. More info... tim
sandpiper
Does this mean that one of our fellow posters now has an obsolete plane like the rest of us mere mortals? Sorry, couldn't resist. There may be an upgrade available but it is probably really expensive unless it's all bolt on.
CT4ME
It's all free, except for labor (about 4 hours)...
FlyingMonkey
Nice deal for current owners. They talk about increased torque, but there are no numbers... ??

Roger Lee
Since part of the cat is out of the bag from the double secret society there is a little more. Rotax didn't want this out to the public until the Sun'n Fun announcement. There should be approx. 100 912is engines in the US by year end. All existing engines will get the new upgraded parts for free. It is just the computers and airbox. The upgrade takes about 4 hrs. You pay the labor parts are free. It adds significant better torque and power. The old parts must be sent back. Now you know what the secret was, but there may be more! (MAYBE you'll get a little extra HP, just maybe)
Steve Moliterno
If we are getting new computers and airbox, does it help with the hard starts or will you still need the soft start modules?
sandpiper
If we are getting new computers and airbox, does it help with the hard starts or will you still need the soft start modules? I thought all recent 912's had soft start. Is that not correct for the injected engines?
Duane Jefts
If we are getting new computers and airbox, does it help with the hard starts or will you still need the soft start modules? The reference is to the fuel injected engines only. Is your question in reference to the CTLSi engine?

Roger Lee
IF I were a betting man I would bet that with the additional torque, engine parameter changes and new air box you'll get and additional 5 hp., but like I said I'm not a betting man, today. S3flyer
You're more in the loop than me but looks like 4hp (3kw): http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/2014-04-01/rotax-improves-its-912is-while-correcting-radio-noise-issues. There is also a good article in EA Experimenter with some performance graph showing climb and take-off roll improvements.
CT4ME
Here's a good interview with Dean Vogel, of Lockwood, concerning the engine... from Sun 'n Fun. tim
sandpiper
Per the interview with Dean Vogel it looks like the conversion labor will be about a days worth of shop time. Still a good deal. I would do it if I had an injected engine.
FlyingMonkey
Would any 912iS owner NOT do this, considering the low, low cost of free??
Farmer
Has anyone actually addressed if this will fit in our ctlsi. Or has the discussioin been mostly Rotex. Farmer
Roger Lee
We don't know yet. You will need about two finger widths more at the top of the original airbox for room. Good question. I know where I can find out. Around the corner form my hangar.
