Baking under the hood?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just did some under the cowl temp checks on two important parts that can be heat sensitive if over baked with the cookies. ;) .

I put heat strips on the ignition modules and the reg/rec. The temp strips ranged from 99F to 230F.

The good news is the temps were above 140F, but below 149F on both parts and that's here in sunny AZ. The magic number to stay away from is 170F and above. This will kill the modules.

p.s.

I have to admit I have header wrap on my pipes and I'll have to check a plane without it  and see if the header wrap helped the temps.

I don't think so.

If the problem stayed the same cyl or plug when you switched the module plugs then the problem is after the modules. In this case it is most likely the plug wire. The boots and the wire at the coil will unscrew. Unscrew the plug boot and trim the wire back about 3/8" and do it on the coil side too. If this doesn't cure the problem replace the plug wire. If you have an AC tester then you can run it down the plug wire while the engine is running and it will show you if the wire is good or bad or where a break is.
