EGT Probe

Good morning,

 

What is the proper EGT probe for the 912ULS.

This is the third one gone bad . TTE 156hrs.

 

Two gone bad on the #1 Cyl

One on the #3

Rich, what kind of instrumentation does the probe hook to? If you have something other than a Dynon display you need to make sure the probe is compatible. Here is the link to ACS. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/dynonsensorsdynon.php

It hooks up to the TruTrac APIII.

The two previous were bad internally at the probe.

Replacing both had fixed the problem.

 

The fixes were spliced after the stainless brading and not brought to the TruTrac unit. Those conections were never touched.

First my left then right EGT gages went dead.  Replaced both EGT senders on my 2006 CTSW which has steam gages.  Called Dynon and they said same Dynon sender used for FD with either Dynon glass or steam gages.  Dynon part number 100405-001.  This is the .75 - 1.25" "K" type with extended leads that have flat blade connectors.  Lady at dynon said they were temporarily out of stock and recommended I call SteinAir 651.460.6955.  Ordered from Jed.  SteinAir sells these for a little less than ACS charges for the sender and they're pleasant to deal with.

Be aware that the only compatibility concern for EGTs is the type of thermocouple (J or K are the most common type) and you can use just about any brand that fits. They correlate temperature to voltage, which remains unchanged if the thermocouple was the size of a pinhead or the size of a quarter. Unless you have a weird proprietary gauge, that is.

 

This is in contrast to just about every other sensor, which is either a potentiometer/rheostat (VDO sensors), piezeoelectrical device (honeywell or kavlico sensor), thermistor (oil temp), or a pulsing sensor (fuel flow), which are all based on current sensing and are much more strict on sensor selection.

Dan,

 

The difference may that my True Trac has a different brand or type of EGT sensors than the Dynon.

All three that went bad on my engine were compatible with the Tru Trac APIII unit.

Make sure you are putting a SMALL "droop" in the wire when you hook up an EGT. You don't want a lot of wire there, just a little. The idea is the engine vibrates and you need a little wire flexibility, but you don't want a bunch hanging off and pulling on the crimp or sensor in the housing.

 

Basically, sort of like a drip loop on a service head for a house:
