Multiple versions of spark plugs

Came across this today.

 

There's multiple versions of the NGK DCPR8E plug. I had ordered a bunch of them from a local parts store, and while trying to remove the end cap, the core broke. Grabbed an old one, and noticed there is a small P/N difference on the box (4339 vs whatever the wrong ones were, can't remember, but it was something like 4319 or 4139). Both plugs said DCPR8E and looked dead nuts the same except for the end cap. The difference between the incorrect and correct types, is the threads are visible in the endcap, whereas the other type is just a solid ball end. Obviously, you want the threaded end cap

 

Edit: as pointed out, tthe wrong one is 4179.

The other is the 4179.

If one looks at the NKG web site and searches on each by part number, the main difference seems to be that one has a solid terminal and the other has a nut on the terminal.

There are two versions. The 4339 is the most common and the one we use. I have seen the others at automotive stores and even that depends on what the clerk orders

I got the wrong ones once at my local O'Reilly's.

 

I now make sure all 8 terminals unscrew before I leave the store.

 

I'll note the 4339 and use it next time I order.

I've purchased the correct plugs at NAPA and at O'Reilly's.

This sparkplug thing has been around for quite a while. You need to order by the product code instead of the sparkplug number. I order mine from NAPA by the 4339 number. I order 40 at a time for a good price break, and as a bonus no shipping. The price had went up a little the last time I bought some, but still a good price.

Paid 2.39 per plug plus tax, pn 4339. It's about the only thing on these planes that is cheap!
