Rich
Flight numbers for Sting S-4 912 ULS. January 20, 2015 892 NM 7:10 minutes 124 KTS---142 SMPH Average ground speed. 112 KIAS. 5420-5450 RPM's 43.4 Gal. fuel used 20.5 NMPG----23 SMPG 6.1 GPH DUC Swirl Inconel prop at 22 degrees 3,000, 3500, 2500 MSL respectfully. Tail winds of 3 -9 KTS until Chesapeake Bay. That's if the 796 wind read outs were correct. Good wx untill over the Chesapeake Bay where the wx went downhill. Diversions around snow showers were needed and ceilings went to 3,000 MSL with Mts obs. Wx through that area was 1000 ft. below morning forcast. Wx update by Wiliamsport Flight Service told the current conditions. Broke out of MVFR at Allentown where visibility improved to N30. I cannot say enough about ADS-B IN with wx and traffic info. It helped me get through some light snow showers and avoid the heavy wx. To me it's invaluable on a long XC. Traffic display was approx 20 NM west of Jacksonville, FL while at 4500 MSL on the trip down from PA. Rich

Mike Koerner
Rich, The Sting doesn't hold 43.4 gallons, does it? How many legs is this? Mike
Rich
Mike, The Sting holds 32 gallons, 20 in the main center tank and 6 in each wing tank. I made two stops for fuel. One in Beaufort County, SC (KARW) and the other at Tappahannok/Essex County (KXSA) in Virginia. The two stops made the total time of the trip 8 hours. Flying time was 7:10. S3flyer
Rich -- I think you can tune your prop another 1/2 - 1 degree and get another 5+ knots TAS out of your S4. I've got the same prop on my S3 and I would see around 118-120 KIAS at 3-4K feet and 5400' RPM this time of year.
Rich
Hi Dave, I now can reach red line easily in cruise with the 22* pitch. Previously I could only reach 5300 at WOT. The 1.5 reduction in pitch, suggested by Roger, made a hugh difference. I'll try removing 1/2* more when the wx warms up a bit. I'm in an open hangar now and that makes it a challenge. Thanks, Rich
IrishAl
I'll try removing 1/2* more Hi Rich, Shouldn't you 'add' rather than 'remove' pitch? (f you can reach redline 'easily' in cruise, aren't you under pitched now?)
Rich
Al, You have a good point and it makes sense. Thanks for the input. Dave's S3 is getting more KIAS than my S4. I possible may get better cruise performance by increasing pitch 1/2 degree. Dave, What is your DUC pitched at?

It may not be an accurate number for either airplane. You would need to know calibrated airspeed to make a fair comparison.
S3flyer
On the S3, KCAS is 1kt lower than KIAS from 30 to 120 KIAS.
FastEddieB
Most planes should be set up so that in the normal cruise regime the difference between IAS and CAS should be very, very small - for the most part negligible. But a good thing to verify in your POH regardless. edited to add: Thanks for prompting me to check mine out: So, contrary to what I said, it seems the sweet spot for my Sky Arrow is about 50k, increasing to about 3.6k difference at 100k indicated. Odd, and a little suspicious, that things snap back into sync at 108k - seems like an outlier. Maybe a good time for everyone to visit their Airspeed Calibration Chart if they have not for a while.
