GravityKnight
Beautiful with the snow, and clouds out today. Very cold though (12 deg on the ground). I only went about 15 miles from the airport.. because as I did, the clouds were getting heavier below. They really weren't moving but I wasn't taking any chances of it moving in over the airport. Airport was up ahead in the video, hard to see, but the sky just opened up and there were literally no clouds around for a few miles. Pretty lucky I could go up, see this while still maintaining visual with the ground, and the ariport remained clear! Pikes Peak is at about 1 o'clock in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKhTD_n5xuc
FlyingMonkey
Nice! It looks like you had plenty of "reference to the ground, but up ahead in your flight path it did look to be getting pretty dense. How did the heater work for you in those temps? FastEddieB
Thanks for the video. One thing I've noticed is that when flying over a broken layer, it virtually always looks worse up ahead, or in any direction for that matter. But as you fly along, the view straight down can remain fairly constant and acceptable. But of course that should not tempt one to continue over an overcast assuming it won't be that bad. Yea, it was kind of like it was underneath, broken areas you could see through. Man that heater doesn't do much of anything I forgot my gloves, and my hands were cold (there is more air leaking around the throttle area than most probably realize- when it's 0 or -10 f air blowing in you notice it!), and the heater just puts a tiny touch of heat by your feet (which weren't cold). Thanks for the video. One thing I've noticed is that when flying over a broken layer, it virtually always looks worse up ahead, or in any direction for that matter. Agreed- it really does look worse than it is.. thankfully. But just in case, I went 15 miles out, then headed back because it looked pretty bad back towards the airport from out there. Once I got back up close to the airport, the sky just opened up and it was perfect. Rolled in over the clouds and dropped down through into the open area around the airport. The couple miles free of clouds around the airport had not really shifted/changed in that short period of time I was out, but I'm glad I played it safe. Did some touch and go's and called it a day. I forgot my action cam or I could have gotten some actual good video.. dang it!
