D100 DG Calibration

I've had my D100 about 8 years and am very comfortable with its operation.  Around every 12-18 months, I need to recalibrate the DG (point the plane N/S/E/W and hit a button at each ordinal).  Not a big deal.  Just curious -- does anyone know why the D100 needs periodic recalibration? This comes to mind after a trip this weekend with the DG perfectly aligned on the trip up to Tulsa but the next day was 30-40 degrees off.

Keep in mind I've only recalibrated 4-5 times over its 8 year life.  I'd say it was less than 10 degrees per ordinal.  This time it was nearly 40 degrees off on N/S and around 20 on E/W.  I usually start my taxi within a couple minutes of start up and have never really had issues.  Yesterday, I was probably a bit longer without moving as I was at a controlled airport and it took a couple more mins to get a taxi clearance.  One thing that was a bit different was that I parked facing south but the wind had become a strong north wind by the next day so I simply turned my aircraft around before firing it up.  I would say that I'm always facing the same direction when I fire up at my home drone.

Yup -- latest and greatest software and did not the opportunity to power cycle.  After landing, I left the avionics on and recalibrated before putting back in the hangar.  DG was working fine at that point.

I was just wondering why it loses its brains periodically.

Where is your remote compass sensor mounted? Maybe you are putting something near the remote sensor that is messing it up. My first CT had the D100 installed in the field, and they mounted the sensor in the baggage. Onetime flying back from a airshow with bag chairs and some freebees that included some magnetic items my compass in the D100 was way off.
