FlyingMonkey Posted February 9, 2016 Report Share Posted February 9, 2016 For those waiting for an "all-in-one" ADS-B solution that just slides into a Garmin transponder tray, your prayers are answered: http://newsroom.garmin.com/press-release/featured-releases/garmin-unveils-next-generation-all-one-ads-b-transponders The new units have IN and OUT, a 2020-compliant GPS source, transponder replacement, bluetooth that talks to Garmin pilot AND ForeFlight (shocking Garmin doesn't force Pilot on users) for weather and traffic display, does both 1090 and 978 frequencies, and has other bells and whistles. At $5795 it's not any cheaper than a GDL-84, but with the simpler install (slide into existing transponder tray, wire audio if you want audio alerts for traffic) and the fact you can sell your old GTX327 or GTX330, the all-in cost might well be a bit less. Blue Mountain Avionics has been out of business for years but so far I have been able to hack the code to modify my display. I bet I can get traffic on it if not weather. Needs mounting of a remote encoder for pitot static but is very small and can mount anywhere. But here is a possible issue for us. The new 345 is just under 11" deep....... Not ideal as it would jut out from the panel somewhat, but I've seen other planes with devices mounted that way and it's not the worth thing in the world. Somebody in another forum mentioned a remote mounted GTX 345R. If such a thing can be mounted to talk to a control face plate, problem solved. That means less weight and less space devoted to avionics. And there is a still four years to the deadline, so other refinements by Garmin or other companies seems likely. The SL30 is a tad longer so if you have one of those I see no reason it will not fit. I just bought one. Retail was $5795.00 and I got it for $4800.00. Purchased a ADS-B antenna for $250.00 and the Garmin encoder was $250.00. This is for the GTX 345 w/GPS. Has Bluetooth so it will talk to mey796. ADS-B in and out. Even Aircraft Spruce sells the Garmin product discounted from MSRP... If you call around you may even find it cheaper. I know what cost is and there is still a little room...
