They had that exemption a long time ago if I recall.

 

No. They had a 1480 pound exemption the first round.  Notice they are using the 912iS engine...guess the CLTSi should be able to go 500 lbs overweight...that would make the CTLSi have a  useful load of 1000 lbs.

EAA (2004): "The LSA weight limit should be higher than 1320lb, so we can incorporate more safety features and stronger structure."

 

FAA (2004):  "No way.  The kinetic energy increase in an impact will make the aircraft more dangerous to both passengers and bystanders on the ground."

 

Terrafugia (2016):  "Hey Brah, you should let us certify this LSA at 1800lb, because we have more safety features and stronger structure!"

 

FAA (2016):  "Sure thing Brah, makes sense to us!"
