Do you guys pay a monthly for this?  If so, which one of the devices plans do you use?

Most of us use the SPOT. The new Gen3 units are about $150. About $170 year with tracking and rescue insurance.

Delorme InReach SE is nice, too, but costs more for unit and service, but has texting and two way text communications with rescuers

I went with an ACR RescueLink+ PLB.  It doesn't have the nice in-flight tracking features of the SPOT, but being a 406MHz + GPS device tied into the SAR system, it gives a bit better rescue reliability and response time.  Whether a SPOT or a PLB is a "better" device really comes down to pilot preference and what you want to do with it.  The InReach does look very nice.

You all should follow Duane and Larry's Spot track over the next 6 weeks. They are flying through Alaska, the US and to Oshkosh over that time period and should be using their spot. Right now they are headed to Las Vegas for a day and then the next day to the San Juan's and then on up through Canada and Alaska. They are flying a CTLS and a CTLSi. It should be over 100 hrs. of flight time.

Stay tuned.

'Looks like they made it to Ketchikan... weax was good.  Around 4 hours of the most amazing flying and scenery I'm sure.  Definite Bucket List material.

Thanks, Mike...

I've been wanting to see what their linked map looked like.  They don't seem to have a demo (dumb).  The maps looks good.  I like the speed and altitude info.  Question:  The times show 1:30 am...  are you a nightbird, or is it some sort of time zone thing?
