  1. For surface, what Tom posted. For various altitudes up to 24 hours out https://aviationweather.gov/gfa/#winds
  2. Roger, we knew it isn't you, but there is no credibility to someone who remains anonymous. Unless you watch The Wizard of Oz.
  3. Congratulations and thanks to Tom and his partners and helpers for putting on a first class eclipse viewing at Olney-Noble airport. I think about 28 airplanes showed up , from Conquest and TBM (or Pilatus, I can never tell them apart) to small tail wheel and everything in between, including three FD CT fly-ins. The weather for the flight and viewing was superb. Tom outdid himself on a tasty lunch. Everyone had a good time. There was a lot of visiting back and forth and looking at each others planes, asking where we were from, and so forth. I met a couple who lived about 20 miles up the road from in Iowa, and maybe rekindled a spark for him to get his pilot certificate. He was eager to show his wife the parachute in my FD CTSW. Thanks again, Tom, this was quite a treat.
  4. I'm personally OK with an entry that says a mechanic did something by a commonly available checklist, because someone else can refer to the checklist. What I'm not OK with is if a mechanic working on an SLSA changes an OEM item and doesn't write that down. For example, if one uses a non-OEM hose and doesn't describe it. Since the owner (not the mechanic) is responsible for maintenance, the mechanic who changes an OEM item for a non-OEM item and makes a generic entry like "changed hose" is hanging the owner out to dry. I don't need to see changed oil with Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 because that is what Rotax calls for, but is one uses Rotella 10-40, it certainly needs to be written up. Same with using a Gates Hose us-spec hose when Rotax calls for a specific DIN.
  5. I see in the example the notation of NGK DCPR8E plugs and Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 oil. When changing rubber hoses on an SLSA, should one note the specifications of the hose, such as if you replace the return oil hose from the bottom of the crankcase to the oil tank, should you say replaced with DIN 73379, 7.5X3.0, or is it enough to just say replaced oil hoses?

  7. Are you a student or instructor at the flight school at Uljin, Bongsan-Ri?
  8. I don't know if Flight Design has it's own version of SkyView software. If it does, this forum or Airtime Aviation would be good resources. If yours is a general configuration - not configured by Flight Design as Vans RV is - then you might try the Dynon forum. https://forum.flydynon.com Servus.
  9. Roger, it's good that you clarify that when you say, "go down to your local Ace Hardware", you really mean go to YOUR Ace Hardware. But, FWIW, your store has one and only one 6mm lock nut, the very same as the one in Page.
  10. I looked at the 6mm locknut selection from Ace in Page AZ. One choice. If it's what you want, maybe it's OK. I looked at the offerings from McMaster Carr. Six selections, all well described, including what ISO and DIN standards they meet. If one needs a nut right now and thinks it's OK, one from Ace may do the job. If one is stocking nuts to have on hand, it's nice to know that the items from McMaster Carr are thoroughly described so one has a better feel for the provenance.

  12. The recent Rotax bulletin is silent on when to change coolant. It refers one to the coolant manufacturer. One coolant mentioned by Rotax, Prestone DEX COOL, says this, " Protects vital engine parts for up to 5 years/150,000 miles with Extended Life Formula." One assumes one would have to check the coolant manufacturer for each brand or version. If one did so, then one might make a suspense calendar entry (like we do for ELT batteries) that tells when the coolant replacement is due. I don't agree with tying unlike items which can be judged by differing criteria to the same time frame. We see many examples on this forum of people arguing that a given inspection can be deferred based on judgment. In that case, the associated item inspection may also be deferred without due consideration. But - whatever floats your boat.
  13. You take a longer flight in many parts of Iowa and you will have to buzz the water tower to know what town you are over. There'll be a town every 6 or so miles on a grid and unless you know which side of the tracks the grain elevator is on you won't know Belle Plain from Newhall from Van Horne. In the old days, there would be the name of the airport and an arrow on some large building roof, but you almost never see that anymore. How many of you have seen the arrow to the airport?
  14. What CAD program do (any or all of) you use? I have to make a panel for my Rans S-7S and am quite likely to remake panels for my CTSW.
  15. Mine (I've done two) were around $500 each but that was several years ago. Here is a thread on this topic.
