  1. Early Mooneys had ram-air. To be used at higher altitudes and in clean air, you would open a small door on the cowling. This allowed air to bypass the filter and would give about 1" of additional manifold pressure. More efficient air intake through the filters was created for later models, but it was pretty cool for the older models. If your filter, which was stuck on the outside of the cowling, ever iced up, you could also use the ram air to get undisturbed air for hopefully long enough to get out of the icing conditions.

  3. I agree that having someone do the prebuy that hasn't been working on the airplane is important. If it checks out, then you can go back to the prior guy for continuing maintenance. When looking at the price, consider when the parachute and hose change is due. These seem to be the big expenses, so if they are due soon, negotiate on the price or just be ready to pay the the money when due. Otherwise, the planes are pretty simple if maintained by someone familiar with them. Not sure what else you may be asking for. Like every other airplane ever built, they are not perfect, but they are a very good plane for the role they fill. Just make sure that is what you are looking for! If everything checks out, buy it and have fun! I do suggest getting some dual in with someone familiar with the plane. At first, they can be tough to land. Once you become comfortable, it's not an issue. In the air, it seems like a pretty forgiving airplane. I have 1400 hours in various aircraft, but the CT series has been the most fun to fly!
  4. I bought my ctsw a year ago and split an annual with the purchase. I figured the annual would be ok until I could have one of our experts look at it. Well, it was just annualed by one of the experts from this site. There were a number of little issues that could have become major issues, like some hoses attached with stripped clamps or no clamp at all. The only thing holding these hoses on were the hoses themselves! One prop blade way out of adjustment from the other two. Lot's of stuff like this that may have not been found by an A&P not familiar with rotax or the CT series. Have a prebuy done by somebody that knows what they are doing! Good luck, they are a fun airplane!
  5. Our local sheriff's department sold a 2014 LS with all the high tech camera and lighting equipment. It had about 1400 hours. It sold on a government auction for the minimum bid of $100k. I think we all missed out on this one because I was told the camera equipment could be removed and sold for $300-400k!
  6. Lots of old Mooneys have had after market bladders installed for fuel. One time deal and no more leaks. Mine had it and they were great. Mooneys have a really tough airframe and wing. If there isn't corrosion problems, you won't have to worry about issues like spar cracks and similar issues starting to show up on other brands of older planes. One piece wing with the first ever failure in the last 6 months, but due to a pilot caused complete loss of control. Even then, people were surprised the wing broke. Engine compartment is tight though and a little tough to work in, but not too bad. The older planes had 180 or 200 hp. Good cruise at reasonable gas. The F model and 201 are considered mid body length, which is the 10 inch stretch I referred to. Same airframe, but the 201 has some speed mods. About 145 kts cruise on an F model and 155 kts on a 201, which is pretty good on 200 hp.Tons of after market speed mods available if you need faster... Plenty of room in back seat and baggage. People think they are small on the inside, but they are actually wider than the bonanza. The seating position is different, with a lower seating position, which makes them look smaller. The panel is also closer than most airplanes, again making them seem smaller. No problem with taller pilots. They are tighter getting in and out than some other planes, but comfortable once inside. Later, long body models have bigger engines and faster, but are much more expensive to buy and burn a lot more fuel.

    In my area of California, 100ll or 91 with ethanol are my only options. So far, 91 with ethanol has been working great.

  13. I guess some airports in California are now selling the newly approved 100ul fuel. Any issues with using this with the Rotax? I'm guessing it would be the ideal fuel, but I don't know much about it
  14. Ed, I saw your prior post and this and think it is a great option. I would prefer a vertical mount, but either way would be a huge improvement. Might be the best option for me!
  15. Thanks for the input on the 660. I think it may be to small for my old eyes too. I may have to look at different options, but the 760 won't fit. I don't have any external switches of the "XM music" type. I may take a quick look behind the panel, but radio wiring is not a strong point for me. May be time for an avionics shop, but I was hoping to avoid that.
  16. I've been spending all my time flying since I bought her in December, but now it's time to do a little troubleshooting. I have the d100/120 set up with a 496 (no xm subscription) and a gnc 250xl gps/com. In the airplane, I receive no audible alerts of any kind. I have gone into the programs for the d100 and the 496 to make sure they are on, but I still don't get anything. I should mention that where the auxiliary input on the panel is supposed to be, there is just an empty hole. I'm wondering if someone disconnected all audio from the intercom, but haven't looked into it yet. Any suggestions before I get started? While I'm here...the 496 is really to small for me to see. Even though I use Foreflight, I would really like a panel mount map that I can use. I wanted to replace the 496 with an aera 760, but due to the gnc 250 being larger than the standard 30/40 com set up, the 760 can not be made to fit. Is the aera 660 a big enough improvement in screen size to bother replacing the 496 with the 660? I have seen a 660, but not a mounted one, or even directly next to the 496, and it's hard for me to judge the visual improvement. If I decide to get a 660, can an A&P install since it is a portable, or does it still have to be done by an avionics shop? Of course I would love to upgrade the d100 to a Skyview system, but that's more than I want to spend. I have plans to convert to esla in the future to make things easier, but I'm gonna wait to see what the light sport changes might be. While I doubt it will happen, and I love the ctsw, I really need 4 seats. As always, thanks in advance for the suggestions!

  18. It was a great trip out from California! About 17 hours of flight time each way! The little plane performed great. Even taking off at a 9000 ft density altitude wasn't a problem. And I'm still surprised how comfortable it is. While there, I compared numbers to a lot of the other light sport aircraft being manufactured. Unless you are looking for a STOL aircraft, the CT series seems hard to beat.
  19. Thanks for all the help guys. Was normal for the last 15 hours of flight time, but it was probably giving me a warning. At least now I know where to begin my troubleshooting.
  20. When comparing the fuel flow before and after, it was a similar cruise altitudes, speeds and rpm, so there was definitely something amiss. I've flown the airplane 90 hours in the last six months and I'm familiar enough with the settings while flying the airplane to see it was obviously different from prior flights. Prop pitch, dynon setting, floats and that kind of stuff shouldn't have changed between 2 flights in one week. I had also checked the air filter and it was good. The impeller or a clogged fuel filter would make more sense to me. I certainly appreciate this information. Today, fuel burn was back to normal, so not sure what the problem was. I wish a good wash and wax would have helped my fuel burn. At least it looked pretty!
  21. Started a day early and left on Friday. Staying the night in Rawlins Wyoming. Hopefully will make the remainder of the trip tomorrow, but if not, should be there Sunday. Today was a long, but enjoyable day!
  22. My fuel flow on the Dynon d100 usually shows about 5.6 gph between 5100 and 5200 rpm. Over the last 6 months, this has been pretty accurate. I just did an oil and plug change, along with a wash of the plane. The following flight, fuel flow was showing about 4.5 gph for the same rpm range. This is not going to be correct for the plane. Any idea where to find the problem?
