    I feel I need to add some info to this thread. I just finished an annual on a first-time customer's 2007 CTSW. It has a bit less than 500 hours on it. Looks pretty good, but he has been using an A&P who doesn't understand the importance of reading a Rotax manual. don't get me started about him. I found two major airworthiness issues. I will only discuss one here for now. The aircraft had a fuel leak and needed the sight tubes changed, so I drained the fuel and prepared to pull the wings off a bit. The 5 year hose change had been done, but the fuel lines at the wing root were still original. While we drained the tanks (through the gascolator) I noticed that the right wing drained much faster than the left, which didn't seem to drain much at all. In fact, the right wing emptied out, and the fuel stopped flowing when the left wing got down to five gallons. I grabbed my borescope and took a look at the wing root fuel line, and found that it was kinked to the point that fuel would not flow through it. This was the original hose from the factory. I ended up draining the last five gallons through the sight tube which can be messy at best. The fuel lines in the wing root are very difficult to remove and reinstall, so I think that it's tempting for the mechanic to leave them be. It's also quite easy to put the new ones back in with a brand new kink. So, don't just assume that uneven fuel flow is caused by uncoordination, fuel vent pressure, or the shape of the tanks. It could be much worse. I would recommend that anyone with an uneven flow problem go ahead and drain the tanks completely and make sure it drains. Be sure to ground the aircraft. I wrap a large wet towel around the plastic tank and gascolator to ground it.
  3. AutoGyro of Germany is producing about an aircraft a day. They have over 2000 aircraft flying. I bought a Calidus model a year ago, and it is by far the most fun you can have flying. It cruises at about 85 kts, 300 mile legs, my useful load is 577 lbs, and the takeoff/landing distance is very short. It is fun to fly in up to about a 40 knot wind. The best part is that with the low Euro the price of a new Calidus with a 914 turbo Rotax is about $85,000. I don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but that seems to happen when I start talking about them. Even though they are not technically an LSA, since they meet the definition of an LSA they can be flown by a sport pilot. Existing sport pilots can get checked out by flying with two CFIs.     It fiberglass. I don't actually see any sign of a foam core on the fin either. When the paint dries I'll do a tap test. Seriously though, regardless of the reason, based on the pics Floats posted, this is a big deal.

    It isn't water damage. That makes no sense. I doubt the aircraft has ever been flown in the rain or sat out in the rain, it only rains about 12" a year here, and the humidity is extremely dry. Besides, a water-soluble aircraft would be a joke. I have thousands of hours in Cirrus and Columbia aircraft and have never seen damage like this. There was virtually no entry point for water, and the drain was clear. A chemical in the water would cause universal damage to the aircraft, not just in an isolated location. I have a really bad feeling about this for the entire fleet. The pics that Floats posted are amazing. If I were the manufacturer I would immediately go into damage control mode and figure out what the problem is, and make sure it is taken care of right away. Underlying damage like this is dangerous.     This is on the vertical fin on a 2006 CTSW in the Idaho desert. This aircraft has always been stored in the heated hanger. I have it in the shop to repair the fin after it suffered damage from striking the ground during taxi. The waviness has nothing to do with the incident. Cammie Patch A&P
