Alaska trip 2012?

We are still searching for some wording that prevents an overflight of Canada. So far we can not find an issue if you do not land. This past summer overflights from Michigan to New York were common place, even for Light Sports Pilots in LSA. You must have a flight plan and be talking to their ATC. There is a You Tube of a Remos "Fight for Human Spirit" making the same flight. In his case it appears that he put a flight instructor in the right seat to make the flight from Washington to PAKT. He actually landed in Canada during that flight. If a person did that it might add $600 to trip cost. I think that the estimatee of $6-7K is close. I may have a sponsor for much of the fuel bills. I will be prepared to camp if necessary, sleeping bag, etc. I have found that meeting people and perhaps a cabin or two, or maybe a boat, might be necessary for the hot shower. The larger cities have regular chain motels and BB. The last time I visited Kodiak Island we shopped at WalMart. Summer has many tourist, RV Parks at many locations, some even have cabins. I know of a small motel on the Dalton Highway above the Artic circle, resturant, fuel station and airport next door. I think that with flexible planning food, fuel, and rest will not be free, but affordable. A remote fishing trip might cost $5K or more per week. I will be buying my fish from Costco.

 

While traveling to 26 states this past summer (over 100 flight hours) my wife and I never filed a flight plan, or reserved a room ahead of time. Some days I ended up a State away from where I thought I might be. People were very, very friendly and helpful. More later.

On further reflection.....I can't spend $6,000 this year. I'm holding my wife down on spending to work on paying off some farm debts and I can't spend that money and tell her not to. I hope that in about 3 years I can do it. But right now, I'd have to win (and play) the lotto.

 

Here I was all excited about it and it's something in my bucket list.

Well ...heres where im at on this trip. I had 2 other ct's and one remos that was going to go.

I know i can speak for the two other cts as any of us would be willing to tough anything out during the day but NONE of us would consider for a second sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags!!! I ALWAYS HATED CAMPING!!!

Even when i elk hunt i have better accommodations than whats being decribed.

I would think one could fly into alaska and have good lodging, warm showers and good food....if anyone can figure out that route count us in.

You should be able to get decent, but perhaps expensive and somewhat rustic, lodging along the road system and most of the major towns. Reservations would be helpful that time of year. Lodging probably won't be available at most of the villages unless you know someone. Even then, good luck. My wife, working for Alaska dept. of Transportation, acquired properties for airport projects from the native corporations. This required travel to many villages. There were times when she had to spend the night at abandoned canneries, or at ADOT rural maintenance facilities, in a sleeping bag. That was with connections!!

 

The Dalton Highway lodging described is at Coldfoot. It was a decent place to stay. Probably even better now. There also used to be a place where the Dalton crossed the Yukon. The airport was several miles away but they would come to get you. I don't know if it's still there.

 

Anyway, with a little research, some money, willingness to alter your route, and luck, you should be able to sleep inside most of the time even if the toilet is an outhouse or a honey bucket! At least that way you might survive the mosquitos, white sox and other obnoxious blood sucking insects not to mention some four legged critters looking for a meal. Be sure to at least carry a shotgun. You can carry those through Canada with a permit.

I am excited about the level of interest you describe. I am going in N413L, my brothers is going in N413F, Chanik was planning to go even before I started this thread. An additional three or four aircraft would make a nice size group. I think that we will be able to base out of a town with accomadation for a couple of days at a time, perhaps more. Just like Page side trips, which might be a couple hours rather that an hour or less each way. We can rent a larger van for group tranporation if necessary, will save costs. When needing several rooms we should book ahead, as practical. I am sure that we can use your help for planning in a few week. With long days, nice weather, the interior of the State is not that large for a CT. Anchorage to Nome four hours trip, Fairbanks to Deadhourse on the Artic Ocean about three plus hours. Homer to Kodiak less than three hours. Longest leg in entire trip could be near five hours, with alternates.

 

I look forwarding to hearing about your recent trip in detail. I am sure you will be an important part of finding those comfortable beds each night on this trip. I like to eat at least four time a day so I will help search for food.

Connie will go; she likes getting bit by bugs. A Remos would have to stop in Canada. No way that thing can make a 520nm trip. I'm a worst case planner so I figure I want all the camping gear for the survival kit anyway. Many of the spots I want to go are very remote, so maybe I can sleep in some shed or someone's home but I won't count on it. I have room for another tent in the 25' square electric fence area. Got a .44 Magnum. Bug juice. Pop tarts. All set.

Well, not too much has been added to the schedule. I need to be back by end of July so I plan on heading out from KRHV on July 1 and meeting whomever at OAK or 1RL on the 2nd to wait for an opportune time to make the long leg up to Ketchikan. So that's my official launch date. If anyone wishes to join up, you are welcome but it would be good to get a headcount now and start planning. Just let me know and we'll exchange phone numbers/emails and start coordinating exactly when and where to meet up in WA.

One CANNOT operate a US-registered aircraft in Canadian airspace with a FAA pilot certificate (that provides for flight in international airspace) and an expired medical certificate.

 

 

 

With a faa pilots certificate and a current FAA medical, can one overfly Canada in a light sport aircraft?

 

 

 

One CAN operate a US-registered light-sport aircraft in Canadian airspace with a FAA pilot certificate (that provides for flight in international airspace) and a current (valid) appropriate medical certificate.

 

 

 

 

 

NOTES:

In other words, the aircraft aircraft is okay; the problem is the light sport certificate.

 

 

 

The minimum FAA pilot certificate required to operate a US-registered light sport aircraft in Canadian airspace is a FAA private pilot certificate, accompanied by a valid and appropriate medical certificate.

 

 

 

 

 

I have read TP 15048 - Flying to Canada- What you should know. It does not address the above "overflight" questions.

As Larry the farmer related earlier, we are definitely planning the trip to Alaska in July.

 

We are waiting for his second CTLS to be delivered to Las Vegas and then we will be flying both aircraft to Alaska.

 

Final planning depends on Aircraft delivery in ?April?.

Not sure what the problems were with airplane delivery but looks like the April 15 delivery has been pushed back to late June.

 

This probably means a 1 July departure might be pushed back to mid July. We want to take both airplanes on the trip.

 

Just an update but the farmer and I are definitely going, just not quite as soon as we planned.

 

The weather should be excellent that time of the year.

Talk is cheap, True confessions, Expect the unexpected.

 

You have read about a planned trip to Alaska this year. Delayed departure, date unknown, perhaps one year late.

 

While working in the woods with my 60 ton bulldozer a few weeks ago I tangled with that unexpected thing. Nothing that a couple of surgeries won't fix. First surgery done already. Nothing real serious, more of an embarresent, as I tell my employees never to take a chance and then %3&)%#.

 

Just wanted to explain why trip is delayed and was not just talk.

Time to consider a reboot of this flight. Leaving around July 5 and returning July 31 roughly. Here is a gps track file you can import into google earth (use lines to shpw the path and destinations. 5600nm in total but the flight way up to Kaktovik to see polar bears could be sacrificed if I'm running late. If your refering to 89WD (mike) I'm just traveling with a friend like I did when I took her down to Jamaica, the Caymans, Mexico, Bahamas, etc. I would be happy to meet, travel, etc with anyone else. Leaving 10th or so of June. Planning on 3 wks - more or less. I'm a PP, Com, Inst.
