ALSO...if you are signed up for the raft trip Wednesday with Colorado Discovery BE SURE to tell them you are with the CT Group.  As noted by Roger above, anyone who may have signed up but did not specify being with the CT Group is not included in the number I have received from the company rep.  We need a minimum number to get our own raft.  No problem if we don't have the numbers...we'll just be mixed into a raft with other paying non-CT group folks.

The Southeast is about to get covered up with an eastbound frontal system colliding with Hurricane Nate That is going to drop ceilings and dump a lot of water.  Bill Ince and myself are still planning to attend, but if and when is looking pretty weather-dependent at the moment.  We'll advise when we have a clearer picture of what our Monday launch window looks like.

2017 Annual Page, AZ  Fly-In Oct. 11 -15, 2017
(Colorado River raft trip morning of Oct. 11th)
Page Fly-In Flight Information

As we have done in the past we will break up in groups of 3-5 planes and each group will have a leader for your chosen flight out that morning. Then each evening at dinner you can pick where you would like to go the next morning which may be with the same group or a different group. Having small groups limits the flight congestion within one area and makes the aircraft in the group easier to manage. We will discuss this further at the Thursday evening meal. This dinner is a must to get all the Fly-In information.
We have the restaurant all to ourselves (The Ranch House Grill) and dinners are catered and it is a nice leisurely 2 block easy walk from the hotel. Dinner gathering and meeting Wednesday through Friday evenings starts at 1700 hrs. and we eat at 1800 hrs. Our final night dinner on Saturday October 14 will be a The Dam Bar and Grill at 1800 about 4 blocks from the hotel.  Breakfast is either the free one at the hotel, out at a local restaurant or more likely during one of your group flights at the local airport restaurant. Late afternoon flights are another good time if you and others would like to fly and check out even more scenery and or grab lunch. A 12 person Ford van has been rented and will be available to take folks to and from the airport, restaurants, etc.

General information

Page, AZ Airport (KPGA) Runway 15-33 Freq. 122.8 Runway 33 is the preferred calm wind runway
                                                 FBO: Classic @ 122.85 Kris 928-645-5356

GROUP SIGHTSEEING FLIGHTS

Grand Canyon Flight

Grand Canyon (see Grand Canyon VFR map) round trip is approximately 173 miles 1.7 hrs.
Route: From KPGA head west with an easy climb to 10.5K to Fossil Corridor @ N36 22.87 / W112.18.70  and then turn south at the corridor head and monitor freq. 127.05. Always monitor this freq. while in the Grand Canyon area. (You aren’t really that high off the rim as it is approximately 7500’elevation) Exit Fossil Corridor at 10.5K @ N36 16.43 /W112 34.97 and turn east along the Grand Canyon rim. Start a slow climb here to 11.5K to enter the Zuni north bound corridor @ N35 58.33 / W111 53.39 and exit  @ N36 17.38 / W111 51.04.  Having the Grand Canyon special chart is recommended, AND IS REQUIRED by the Flight Leader.
As you exit the Zuni corridor on the north side of the canyon you will be on the south end of Marble
Canyon and headed back towards Page which is a short flight home. While in Marble Canyon monitor 120.05). If you choose to go to breakfast in Marble Canyon you will now start a decent into for the Marble Canyon airstrip (L41, Freq, 122.9, Elev. 3603’) and restaurant which is only 10-12 minutes south of Page. After breakfast it is only a 10 minutes flight back into Page.

Monument Valley Flight

Monument Valley Airport (UT25) Runway 16-34. You only land on 16 and take off on 34 Freq. 122.9.Runway 16 is a slight uphill. This round trip is approximately 185 miles and 2 hrs. of beautiful zigzagging through Monument Valley. There is a restaurant and we will have breakfast there on Friday and Saturday flights.  It is a nice, short, but uphill morning walk.  A van may be available but not guaranteed…call (435) 727-3231).
KPGA to UT25 @ N37 01.003 / W110 12.020. When you leave MV head north to Mexican Hat  @ N37 09.016 / W109.51.541, then west to Lake Powell @ N37 17.535 / W 110 23.171 and finally south down a lake finger tributary to KPGA.
This will give you only a general route and or you can and probably will zigzag around Monument Valley to take in all the sites. Flight altitude is at pilot’s discretion but be aware that this is a Navajo Tribal Park and is considered sacred by the Navajo so be mindful of this.  Do not fly lower than FAR minimums over people, vehicles, or structures.

Bryce & Zion National Park Flight

Bryce Airport (KBCE) Freq. 122.8 Runway 03-21 272 miles 2.5 hrs.
KPGA to BCE which goes right over the top of the Hoodoos in the canyon, What’s a Hoodoo?  Wait and see, but have the camera ready. Land at Bryce Canyon for breakfast. A van from Ruby’s Inn will pick you up (call: (435) 834-5341) OPTIONAL ON RETURN: Take off and head southwest to Zion National Park general area @ N37 14.847 / W113 05.115 and fly down the Devils Backbone in Zion.(You’ll know it when you see it) Then turn back southeast to KPGA at this point.  Flights to Bryce will have breakfast at Bryce Canyon Ruby’s Inn on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Lake Powell to and then up Escalante Canyon Flight

Escalante Airport (1L7).  Freq. 122.8  Runway 13-31.  Elevation 5733’  140 miles roundtrip.  This is a flight about halfway up Lake Powell to the confluence with the Escalante River and then up the spectacular Escalante Canyon to 1L7. You can fly an altitude at pilot’s discretion but do not lose sight of your group. Be advised that this is an over-water flight through about half of the distance.  Wearing of an inflatable life vest is optional and at pilot’s discretion but is a prudent option if available.  There are some altitude recommendations for tourist flights avoidance, i.e. even and odds that they suggest you fly to stay with the flow of other possible aircraft traffic.  That info will be briefed in detail at our pilot dinner briefings. With a direct return to Page the round trip is approximately 140 miles.  A van will be available from the City of Escalante to take you to breakfast in town, 2 miles from the airport.  Call Louise Barnes (435) 826-4446 or cell (435) 616-4432 prior to departure from Page to provide the ETA at 1L7 so the van can be there waiting.

Lake Powell to Bullfrog Basin Resort Restaurant Flight

Bullfrog is U07,N37.32.44.96 and W110.42.47.51, the elevation is 4167’ and the Bullfrog airport Freq. is 122.80.  The restaurant is open from 0700 to 1000 hrs for a full breakfast.
The runway is 3500’ x40’ and runways 1-19. AWOS at U96 (9nm se) is 134.37
Follow Lake Powell up the channel northeast bound and head into the Bullfrog Basin Resort restaurant for breakfast or lunch. The resort will come out the very short distance to pick you up. Call them for pick up @ (435) 684-3032 or better to call “Bullfrog Unicom” 122.80 for transportation when you are ten minutes out. You can fly very low or high and it’s up to you; be advised that this is an over-water flight through most of the distance.  There are some altitude recommendations for tourist flights avoidance, i.e. even and odds they suggest you fly to stay with the flow of other possible aircraft traffic.  That info will be briefed at our pilot dinner briefings.
“Rainbow Bridge” scenic sight up the lake channel GPS coordinates are N37 04.37.39 / W110 57.53.06.  There are very specific altitude and turn direction recommendations for overflying Rainbow Bridge as it is often congested with tour aircraft.  Plus the recommendations offer the best viewing angle; it can be difficult to see from the air as it is tucked into a narrow, deep canyon.

Page to Sedona Flight

Sedona Airport (KSEZ) also is occasionally called the “USS Sedona”…you will understand why when you land there!  CTAF Freq. 123.0.  AWOS 118.525.  Runway 3-21 (3 is calm wind runway).  Elevation 4830’.  252 miles roundtrip.  Due to distance there will be only one group flight to Sedona each day with takeoff at 0700.  The Mesa Grill provides a good breakfast/lunch.  Several pilots at the Fly-in are experienced flying Sedona and will brief the details each evening at our pilot dinner briefings.

—————————————————————
Dinner Wednesday through Friday nights at the Ranch House grill at 1700 hrs. We will have a social hour before the meal (eat at 1800 hrs). This is only 2 blocks down the street from the hotel. The restaurant is closed to the public and only open to us. It is an all inclusive, drinks, salad, two entree meal plus sides and desert. Seconds are good, too. Bring your own alcohol if you want wine or beer. All other drinks they supply. This is when we will decide on and sign up for our daily flights, groups, and times out the next morning.  Our final night dinner - Saturday October 14 will be at The Dam Bar and Grill 4 blocks from the hotel.
—————————————————————
Don’t forget about the Colorado River raft trip. It is on Wednesday the 11th and starts at 1100 hrs. If you haven’t signed up and want to go make those reservations under the name of the CT GROUP and join us.  A 1/2 day raft trip on Wednesday Oct. 11th from Glen Canyon Dam down to just above Lee's Ferry. The trip starts in Page (at 1100 hrs) where we will take a shuttle bus from the outfitters office to the put in point down below the dam. We will board a 20-22 person raft and travel down river for about 1.5 hrs. and get out for drinks and photos. Then back in and on down to just upstream of Lee's Ferry. The raft then turns around and goes full speed back to the dam to catch the shuttle back up to their office and we arrive around 1600-1630 hrs. There is no white water just a nice trip down through the canyons. The cost for all of this is $87 a person. The phone number for the reservations is 928-645-9175.
Don't be left out and don't be late to make the boat; sign up now. They have a 48 hr. cancellation policy and you get it all back except a $7 charge. To do the raft trip means you will have to arrive in Page Oct. 10tth (or very very early on the 11th!).
BRING YOUR HAT, SUNGLASSES, SUNSCREEN AND CAMERA. NO KNIVES OR SHARP OBJECTS ALLOWED.  It generally won’t be hot, but it will be sunny.

An added note, the tourist flights (Otters, Caravans, Skywagons and helicopters) flying up Lake Powell and to Glenn Canyon use 122.75. When we were there last month, it was busy! Classic FBO monitors 122.85.

Yes, 122.75 is the "Uplake Freq" and it is indeed busy!  All aircraft, or at least Flight Leads, need to monitor it...but each group flight is assigned a specific freq for group comms so that we do not interfere with the commercial flight ops.  Thanks for this Tip.  Too bad you can't join us there this month!

Thanks Olav. It would be great to be there! Our schedules worked for September and October's shorter days make the trip from PA a little more challenging. Hoping all have a safe trip. The sights can not be duplicated anywhere else.

I've been searching for Mogas in the area and found some at Cal Black which is a great stop but is 88 octane,  in Hurricane Ut (General Dick Stout Field) there is 91 octane etoh free for $3.86.

Might be fun to stop in Hurricane after Bryce/Zion outing.

I've had a few calls from attendees worried about using 100LL. For the amount of 100LL you'll use for this trip it isn't worth a worry. If you use 91 Oct. most of the time when you're at home then this small amount won't be an issue in the run time of the engine. Use Decalin with the 100LL and that will help mitigate some of the lead.

This single trip's 100LL use amounts to nothing.

Just go have fun and don't overthink everything.

Wish I was there!

We spent a day at Arches National Park. It's in Moab, UT and we flew into Canyonlands (KCNY). It's a great day trip for the folks that have been attending for awhile. You need to rent a van at the airport and then drive the 30 miles to the park. Well worth the effort. Our departure was challenging with a direct crosswind 25G29.

Well, it's just not happening for us.  There is a area of IFR weather from Atlanta to Dallas and all the way to the gulf coast, that is predicted to persist through tomorrow and possibly into Thursday.  That doesn't gove us enough time to get out there and enjoy the sights before having to turn back around and return.  Maybe things will be better next year, or I might even plan a trip out that way before then in late Spring or early Summer when conditions tend to be a be less volatile.

We tried, sorry!

I'm bummed Tim, I've been dreaming of that delicious breakfast at Monument Valley!

Me too. That "Navajo Omelette" is awesome.

Stood up this year . . . by tropical southeastern weather. That Gulf turned into a thunderstorm engine.

Bummed indeed.

October was a good pick for the Page fly-in.  I insisted on it being late enough in the year to avoid the high SW temps and we have been seeing great weather year after year.  Unless you have to commute from the east where apparently they have their good weather in the spring.

Hey everyone,

im considering a last minute trip out to page either tomorrow or Friday. How was the flying today? It was quite windy near salt lake.

Is there any other gatherings during the day besides dinner and breaking up in a small group to go fly? Is it to late to join a group to fly with?

Thanks!
