GrassStripFlyBoy
Saturday has clear sky and 70+ k winds at FL100, maybe I'll finally see 200k ground speed in the CT.
FlyingMonkey
Good luck! I hit 166kt a couple of weeks ago, I might have gotten more if I went up higher. 200kt is a tough number to hit!
Animosity2k
166 Kts GS? Christ! I once eclipsed 168mph ground speed and was amazed! I don't want to sound stupid but there are no GS limitations correct? I'd personally be afraid to go up into 70KT winds even at altitude... Are there no concerns with that and maybe my over anxious mind is just saying it's a bad idea?
GrassStripFlyBoy
Correct - aircraft have no relationship to ground speed. But I won't set a new record today, surface winds on my strip are blowing 20's and gusting insane. Wasted the preheat, was looking doable an hour ago. Animosity2k
Maybe another time! Don't forget we still need to meet up sometime! Whether I fly up there or you come out to Cleveland. Even if it waits till summer would love to meet up!

Just watch out for turbulence which often comes with high wind speeds. Especially, but not always, over mountains. A good wx brief and review of pireps will help. Ed C. can be a good resource about mountain flying.

Next time I get some lower surface winds and 50KT and above aloft I'm going to set out to set some new records in my bird!
