2010 - 4th Annual Page Fly-In

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody! We made it home safe and sound. 4.5hrs nonstop with a slight tailwind this time. One thing I want to mention that was discussed in the meeting. The LED light that I had installed is a direct drop in replacement. However, I'm not recommending it do to a couple of things. One, it's not as bright and secondly, we are getting some kind of interference on our SL-40 when this light is on. It gives out something that causes the squelch to activate while it's on, so don't use it. I'll be returning to the original bulb... Hope everyone made it home safely. I noticed the weather gods closed in on Page after we shut it down. Perfect timing!

Page back to kentucky............................

Well i followed a new friend back to albequrque nm, he gave me directions and i tried to follow.

Couldnt get over the mountains, i now know what it feels like when you are going 100 knots and all of a sudden you beging going down at a rate of 600' per minute, i was just about to go full left aileron and rudder when it blew me up over the mountain, then we hit rain and turbulence we had never seen!!!!!! When i got control of things i was back at sant fe where i had originally come to page. We got a motel for the night!!!!!!!!

That left 9 hours of straight flying home....left santa fe before sun rise headed for tfoy intersection, then headed east, no mountains of any kind! (thank god) went through rain, 2 fronts, fog, landed on my farm 5 mnutes before "pitch" dark.

My runway and home never looked better...

We had a great time, my plane did great, not one problem thanks to my great phone support with roger. Many many people there offerd me advice and help...i was pleasantly surpised to find everyone there was down to earth good folks.

Thanks for having us......

Vicki & MAck

ps: next year i think i will fly out commercial ,buy a plane(local), fly around with you guys, sell it, then fly commercial back home....

I got home yesterday. Thunderstorms in the Central Valley and Bay Area led me to land and stay the night an hour short of home. XM weather allowed me to pick my way through some of it, but wasn't showing a pretty picture any further than I got to. First time that I've been flying and had lightning striking on both sides of me. I had headwinds getting to Page, and coming home. What was forecasted to be 8-9 knots on Sunday, turned out to be 20-24. Turned out to be a long journey.

Once there, I had a great time again. I've been to all four of the Fly-In's we have had at Page, and have also been there on my own. I never get tired of flying in the area. Loved to see alot of the people again, and to meet some new ones.

It was either 26 or 27. But even if 2 showed up it was going to be fun. I was hoping to set an all time recorded of CT's on a field and maybe last year at 29 it was, but I wanted at least 40 this year, but it will have to be next year. Next year we will change up the flying a bit so every one that has been there has something new to look forward to. Plus we'll have a co-pilot (ladies only) things to do.

We had an unprecedented number of last minute cancellations. We normally have 4-5 cancellations, but this year it was 15. At one time we had 43 planes coming.

Sorry if my question came across as negative which was not the intent. I think this event could easily be billed as the largest LSA fly-in in the US. It is a slightly slanted in CT's favor but I hope to even the odds a little next year :D Perhaps the pictures will entice my better half to come along.

Hi S3Flyer,

No offense taken. I just had my hopes for over 40 this year. Seemed like every long distance call I got a week before the fly in was a cancellation. That said 26 is easier to manage than 40.

I put the Fly-in dates on Sport Pilot Talk and 2 other forums and I reminded them. They were all asleep I guess.

Page was a real Hoot, as they say in Tejas. We got as far as Big Bear, then Palm Springs, where my poor bird still sits waiting better weather in the LA basin. We hope to rescue her tomorrow. Here is a link to some photos on snapfish. Thanks to all you good folks for a great time! WF

Wayne,

It was great to see you at Page. I was wondering how the SoCal folks were going to fare with the weather. It didn't look good over that way when I departed from Lancaster in the early afternoon on Sunday. There were low ceilings as far as I could see towards the LA basin. The winds at KWJF were really picking up when I got out of there, and were beginning to bring the clouds over the mountains to the south and west of the area, when I scooted out of there. I got over into the Central Valley just fine, but ended up setting down at Coalinga. Since the winds were a direct crosswind at 12-15, the wider runway at C80 (Coalinga) seemed a better choice than the 30' wide runway at 3O8 (Harris Ranch). Turned out that the runway was the only thing that airport had going for it. It was deserted, had no computer or wireless access, and nothing around it. No motels were willing to come and get me, except for the Harris Ranch. A room and dinner there sure beat a night on a musty old couch, no food, and no computer or wireless, at a deserted airport. The weather settled down a bit in the early evening, and I probably could of made it further on, but by then I was already checked into a great room and eating a delicious dinner. I got out late Monday morning, and had to fly under low ceilings into KRHV, as the forecaster's got it wrong again. The overcast didn't burn off until 2+ hours later than forecasted.

Good luck on getting your plane home tomorrow. I look forward to seeing your pics when Snapfish is up again.

Hi CTers. We had a great time at Page. We stopped at Jean, Nv. for lunch and ended up spending the night there. Were considering the weather when 1/2 inch hail and high winds hit along with thunder and lightning. That finalized our decision to spend the night at the local hotel casino and eat buffet. Got home the next day pretty uneventfully.

See ya next year...

See above: Hey Roger - what if the co-pilot is a guy? Can he go to the ladies only thing?

Hey Roger,

We had such a great time in Page and met some new people that we hope to stay in touch with until next year. As we mentioned, the flight down from Newberg, Oregon was 9 hours (headwind) so we broke it up on the way home and stayed overnight at Nampa, Idaho. We were sorry to have to leave Saturday afternoon, but by doing so we beat the weather and had a great flight home. Thanks again to our day trip leaders, Roger and John. The flying was fantastic.

It was a great pleasure to meet you and your wife. I'm glad you made it home safely! I know you were really worried about it on Saturday morning. Some people weren't so lucky, getting grounded. When we left out Sunday morning heading east, the clouds to the west of Page looked ominous. Keep in touch...

Robin & John,

What time did the hail start falling in Jean? I passed just to the south of there at about 9:45 AM with no sign of anything. I thought you guys were getting ready to leave Page, when I headed out.

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear you guys got home okay. It was good to see you two again, and I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Kurt & Connie got a great photo of you guys with the Mitten monuments behind you. You can download a copy from their album, linked in the post before this one.

Roger: We stopped at Jean about 10:30 AM, and had a long lunch. The California coast was fogged in so we were waiting for it to clear at our home airport. About 1:00 PM, the thunder, lightening and hail started.

Oz,

I was in the lead on the Monument Valley flight. My GPS is showing we were mostly between 5,300 - 6,000' MSL while maneuvering in Monument Valley. 5,200 - 5,400 in Valley of the Gods. I passed by Rainbow Bridge at 5,400, but had flown the Lake up to it at 3,900. The track data shows I topped out at 6,500 at one point, probably when I pulled up to shoot a field goal between a couple of rocks. GPS is not a great measure for altitude, and based on the reported elevations of the airports we took off and landed at, it seems my GPS reads 200' higher than actual. I'm not sure if that was true while in flight, but if so you can adjust the posted numbers accordingly.
