Doug G.
RC owners must register and will be given a number that must be on the planes, etc. over .55 oz. This is not an N number and can be put anywhere on the device that can be seen without using tools to access it. The registration begins Dec 21 and is free until Jan. 20, 2016 after which it will be $5. Any UAS over 55 lbs. must send in a form rather than use the online registration and commercial use has a different process.
FlyingMonkey
I predict compliance with this rule will be low.
FlyingMonkey
I just read the rules on the FAA site. These toys are going to get N-numbers just like real airplanes. I bet they run out of N-numbers in two months.
gbigs
Like the FAR the rules don't matter unless you are caught or have an accident. Then they have the basis to nail your butt to the wall. So go ahead, ignore the rule. Test them.
Doug G.
A few things will counter much of the non-compliance. Stores are already including the info during sales (I think there will soon be a need to have a registration number before purchase), and there was an article in the newspaper. Confiscation for not registering is likely, and for those of us that are serious about RC the AMA will likely require it. The month of free registration will get a lot of folks in, and the first civil case of damage that shows no registration will go badly for the UAS owner. Of course there is no guarantee, and the FAA may decide to use their teeth if it becomes an issue. If you read the ruling document there were much more stringent procedures proposed that the FAA rejected, but they could go that direction. A lot of young people get exposed to flight principles via R/C. So I hope you are pulling for successful, and not onerous, regulation for the sake of safety. Tom Baker
In 2012 Congress mandated that the FAA not impose any rules on model aircraft used for hobby purposes. This new rule seems to be going against that mandate. If this is how the FAA deals with mandates from Congress the outcome of PBOR2 will be interesting. Tom Baker
If you hold any FAA issued certificates I think it would be a good idea to register, because if you get caught they may decide to go after said certificates.

gbigs
The FAA missed it's deadline today to get Part 23 rewrite done and other goodies pushed by the industry. Government employees are the worst workers in the world. They should all be fired.
